I am now informed that Marieusz is to be converted into a “bunkhouse” due to overcrowding at the EWFH’s (ex-wife from hell) casa during the dates in question.  It seems I have been unknowingly volunteered to “keep the lights on” for all sorts of miscreants and revelers and, in one case, my eldest son, during the post graduation fete(s).  [I’ll omit the discussion regarding the whys and hows I am no longer betrothed to this woman; suffice to say this unwitting “volunteering” business is a small indicator of same.]  Were it not for my son’s involvement, I would pitch the lot and scamper away.  However, blood is blood and we members of Clan Donald are thick as thieves.  Therefore, I shall not be able latch upon other Tayanas on this gala outing.

We're hoping to stay overnight on Sunday also and sail back on Monday, but I won't know for sure if I can get Monday off until later in the week. Sandra, Coleman, Michael, Tad: what are your plans for Sunday and Monday?

Tad -

Sons asks or assumes - that's one thing; XFH assumes/volunteers,......I
know where there's a nice beach on which to pound sand all day long.
Directions are easy!

Folks,

I just checked the chartplotter on Traveler for a likely spot to meet. As you head up the Wye, the first bay on the right is Shaw Bay. It's nice, but gets a lot of traffic.

A little further in, just opposite Drum Point, is another small bay. The plotter didn't show a name, but Lloyd's Creek empties into it. We anchored there during the Labor Day weekend 2004 and enjoyed it. I believe it borders on a wildlife sanctuary.

Any other suggestions?

Coleman:
Dividing Creek is our favorite. We spent several night there last year. Good protection from all directions, woods all around with 8' of depth most of the way up. Plus it has a good shore landing (we may have some fresh crew arriving via land on Saturday.) Shaw bay is nice but is a little exposed and can get crowded.

Fellow Raftees:
Looks like we have a good weather forecast for this weekend, assuming Alberto behaves. Current track shows him staying well to our south; even if he takes a more northerly route than predicted, all the weather should be cleared out by Thursday, though we may get some abnormally high tides.
We plan to set sail from the Magothy Friday mid day. Not sure if we'll take the Kent Narrows route or the Bloody Point/Eastern Bay route. If the latter, we might grab an anchorage in the South River (e.g. Harness Creek) or Rhode River Friday night.
Everyone up for our usual pot luck dinner on Saturday night?
Things are looking good for us being able to stay out until Monday, so we're game for any other activities or group soirees on Sunday. There are several nice hiking trails around Dividing Creek.
Any other nominations for the specific anchorage on the Wye for the Saturday Night raft-up? If not, we vote for Dividing Creek.

Dayton-

I think we plan to be anchoring out Friday night - we could meet up over
on the Rhode River or Harness Creek perhaps on Friday as well.
Diving Creek is fine; we've only done Lloyds Creek at Drum point over
there. I am 95% certain that I have a private dive class make-up session
on Monday nite (ears wouldn't clear and since it's a rapivate and she's
going the the Philippines in 7/4, I'm busting the pick as they say to
get her certified in time - scheduling with pool and my other teaching
obligations are a bit limiting now).

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> Dayton:  If you choose to go through the Kent Narrows North Channel, MAKE SURE YOU STAY ON THE GREEN SIDE.  The red side has caved in and there just isn't much water.  The green side has about 7 feet at a normal low tide but it is narrow.  Hopefully it will be dredged by next year.  The south channel is no problem even though the charts show 6 feet just north of #s 2 & 3--at least we have never touched bottom there.

We are hoping to return from Richmond Saturday evening but one never knows.  I will try to give you a call on Sunday if we are able to come down to Dividing creek to see what the group is planning to do.  Perhaps you could give me your cell number if you have it on while on the boat!!  Otherwise I will call on the VHF.  Have a great weekend.

Dick/Sandra:

Dick--Thanks for the heads up on the state of the Kent Narrows channel. I think you've talked me into going around the other way. My cell phone number is 301-910-5951 (Note, however, that due to an unscheduled swimming event, my phone is currently dead; a new phone should have me back on line for the weekend) My wife's cell phone number is 240-643-7922 but her coverage on the eastern shore is spotty.

Sandra--We'll shoot to be in Harness Creek on Friday afternoon or early evening. Call us on our cell phones above if you'll be in the vicinity.

For those joining us by land, here are the driving directions to Dividing Creek on the Wye River:

Here are the directions on how to get to Wye Island itself:

From Bay Bridge (East bound):
Travel 12.5 miles eastbound on Route 50 and turn right onto Carmichael Road. Travel 5.1 miles on Carmichael Road until you cross the Wye Island Bridge. From the Wye Island Bridge, travel south on Wye Island Road for approximately 4.2 miles. Numerous public parking areas are available along Wye Island Road.

Here's the url for the camping map for the refuge:

http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/eastern/wyeislandmap_large.pdf

Dividing Creek is not labeled on the map, but its the biggest creek on the south side of the island with the icons for bathrooms and a camp site right at the mouth of the creek. (Off of Wye Island Road)

Here's the general web site for more information: http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/eastern/wyeisland.html

Hope to see everybody there!!!
